Cigna’s Essential Protection Utilization Management program helps ensure you are getting effective and cost-efficient medications and are using them appropriately. It includes:

• Assessment of drug quantity: The program helps ensure you receive a clinically appropriate quantity of medication for a timeframe that is right for you. It also limits drug waste and stockpiling.
• Opioid safety measures: To help minimize abuse and potential overdose, this program includes prior authorizations for opioid use and sets quantity limits on newly prescribed short-acting medications and on targeted regimens including high dose and cough suppressants.
